Udta Punjab controversy & Drug condition of punjab State

Udta Punjab the movie in controversy has gaining good no of publicity because of censor board decision. The movie based on the drug condition in Punjab state, and the Censor board has taken objection on some content, part of the film.

All film fertility is standing behind the Udta Punjab movie.

If someone wants to address the drug condition from Punjab or any other state through the film what was wrong in it? If you check the last some reports about Punjab state, you will see some shocking information how people are dependent on drug.

Types of Drugs being Used by People in Punjab

  • Phukki is a type of wild grass which is found in Punjab. It is considered as a gateway drug because this drug is encourage young people to being experimenting.
  • The second one is Heroine, which is getting most attention in media as well as in youth.
  • And some others are doda, opium which are opioid groups of drugs.

Facts about Opioid Dependent in Punjab

  • There was a study commissioned by Government i.e Minister of social Justice and Empowerment to calculate the number of opioid dependent individual in Punjab state
  • The “Punjab opioid Dependence Survey (PODS)” is carried out by “Society for Promotion of Youth & Masses” (SPYM) & the researchers from “National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC)” with the help of AIIMS and Health and Family welfare Government of Punjab.
  • Team was introduced one methodology to calculate the number of opioid individual in Punjab, called "Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) with multiplier technique" i.e RDS
  • RDS study was carried out in Bathinda, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Moga, Patiala, Sangrur, Tarn Taran
  • RDS study carried out between February  and April 2015 at Government de-addiction centre

Statistics Over RTD Study

  • The data was collected from 3620 opioid individual dependent
  • 75% of opioid dependent individual are in the age group of 18 to 35 years
  • About 99 % are male and 54 % of them are married, which is very big threat.
  • Out of 3620, 89% are literate and have degree. In these most of them are salaried
  • Remaining are unskilled workers / Labours – 27%, Farmer – 21%, clerical Jobs / Businessmen – 15%, Transport worker – 14% and skilled worker – 13%
  • 56% of opioid dependent peoples are form rural areas
  • And 99% reports Punjabi as their mother tongue
  • Most common drug used by opioid dependent is Heroin which is reported by 53%
  • Followed by doda, phukki and opium reported by 33%
  • And the rest 14% were using variety of opioid.
  • If you consider an average spent on drug by an opioid dependent individual, the Heroine RS.1400/day, the opium dependent RS.40/day, and the pharmaceuticals opioid RS.265/day
Conclusion –
Above data shows that state has sizeable amount of opioid dependent individual, and Government as well as people must take some action to punish the people who are guilty to spread this cancer.
